Brought to you by the guys who released iFighter last year, Super Laser: The Alien Fighter is a space shooter that took the usual shoot’em up concept and added a little twist to it that made the world of difference…. LASERS !
This game is extremely well executed. The menus are nice and intuitive. The game packs 4 different control schemes for those who want their tilt fix or want to go back to basics with the on screen buttons, but let me tell you right now the best set of controls is with out a doubt the “Touch” ones. (Plus, in that mode, they conveniently place the aircraft a little bit higher on the screen than where you set your finger which prevents from obstructing the view.) The shooting is automatic and never stops (just like it should!).
In the beginning of the game you are given a choice between two aircrafts. Choose wisely because that will determine the flight formation of your laser bots:
- The Red aircraft will have the bots follow him as a trail
- The Grey/Blue aircraft will have the bots in a formation around it (my favorite since you can use the bots as a shield more efficiently)
Once you’ve chosen your aircraft you proceed to what seems like a regular (yet awesomely designed) shooter (you know… kill arrays of incoming enemies and the collecting of bonus points) until you kill your first “Special” (golden) enemy. These enemies will always give you a power-up or some HP so keep an eye out for them as they make your journey in this alien infested side of the galaxy much easier.
Once you get Laser Bots the real fun begins. A laser sight will appear in front of your aircraft — this is your laser sight. You want to get enemies to go through it. It will make your Laser Bots lock on their targets. Once all the bots have a target (or the enemy is flying away) the bots will automatically fire at them and destroy them. On top of that, this game has lots of power ups and 3 different types of guns: one that spreads bullets in front of you, one that fires in all directions, and of course one that shoots a laser beam straight ahead. The advantage of the latter one is that the laser won’t stop when it hits an enemy – it will go straight through the enemey and on to the one behind and so forth until it reaches to top of the screen.
This game totally brings back the good old vibes of the afternoons spent playing 1942 at the arcade. I totally love it!
The game is a little short if you play in easy or medium (depending on your skill level) but the hard level should keep you busy for a while. The Plus+ integration lets you share your high scores with your friends and the 12 unlockable awards make for a great replay value.
My Verdict: THUMBS UP d (>_<) b
