Zombie fever has swept across the nation; the undead have been reanimated as cultural icons in entertainment. Though some may avoid the undead like a plague, the zombie franchise has proven to be very much alive, kicking and biting all the way. Dead Nation has been on the PSN store for nearly a month, and the US has killed well over 100 percent of it’s population in zombies. Developed by Housemarque, this dual-stick shooter takes place in a post-apocalyptic metropolis; the objective is to continue down the linear path towards the next checkpoint. With the options of solo, co-op, and online co-op, you (and hopefully a dear friend) will wade through piles of undead innards, mowing down hoards of zombies. The game features a very simple and comfortable button layout. For slaying undead zombies, you are awarded cash, which you can use to unlock and upgrade weapons between checkpoints; new weapons like the flamethrower and blade canon are available as you progress through the game.

Dead Nation has a simple presentation of menus and quick loading times. However, connecting to the leaderboards may be a bit laggy at times. The game itself looks spot on, the lighting is scary, and the hoards are enormous without graphics lag. Unlike the story line, the game isn’t completely mindless. Strategic use of items and map manipulation can take you far and make the game more enjoyable. If you can think of a better way of celebrating your holidays by bundling up with your PS3 and fragging some zombies, send me an email because my week is occupied. Thumbs up.
