Toki Tori HD
Chillingo Ltd.
Puzzle/Platformer
$4.99/£3.99

Freeze rifles, teleportation devices, ghost traps, and much more await you in the addictive and cute puzzle plat former that is; Toki Tori HD. In Toki Tori, you play as a bird by the same name, who has found herself departed from her eggs. It’s your job as a player to reunite the bird with his chicks.

Toki Tori started life back in 2001 with the original released for the GameBoy Colour by Capcom. It was then remastered and rereleased for the PC, Wii, iPhone, and now, iPad. Gameplay has remained much the same as the iphone release, a little under two years ago. Tapping the screen will automatically make Toki walk towards that location, if accessible. If, however, Toki is not physically able to make her way, you will have to place Bridges, freeze enemies to use as stepping stones, and teleport to collect your lost eggs.

Levels increase in difficulty, with hard and bonus levels being unlocked as the game progresses. There are four worlds to traverse, each with twelve normal levels. Harder levels are given in less numbers, but are, as the name suggests, extremely difficult to complete. With every few levels passed, new items will be given to you, along with a description. These items aren’t given to you in a single world, either. They are spread nicely with each, so you are not bombarded with hundreds of items you must learn to use. Items are required to complete the levels and must be used with consideration of your surrounding location, as many items are in short supply for each level.

As mentioned before the levels on their own are difficult, but the hard and bonus sections are brain wracking. If you are at all a puzzle fan, or have played a previous version, Toki Tori HD is a great addition to both a casual or hardcore gamers’ library, but the high price tag of $4.99/£3.99 may put some off, especially with the relatively small amount of levels included and very little replay incentive.
